Intradiscal Injection
Back pain generated from spinal discs is very common. And this type of pain is called discogenic pain. Disc tears, degenerations, and herniations are typical causes. Successful treatment of discogenic pain depends on accurate diagnosis. However, an accurate diagnosis is often challenging to make, because problems of any structure in the back can cause the pain.
In addition reviewing medical history, conducting a physical exam, and ordering imaging tests, doctors sometimes use an intradiscal disc injection of steroid and anesthetic medications to diagnose the condition. Typically, the steroid relieves pain for about 2 to 3 weeks, whereas the anesthetic relieves pain for a few hours to 1-2 days. If the medications injected in a disc results in pain relief to the patient, the physician knows that the injected disc is a source of pain.
