Jill Chu

Surgery / Procedure: Endoscopic Lumbar Discectomy

In June 2009, you operated on my son Timothy Chu. He had a herniated disk from falling on black ice on campus, the pain was excruciating and constant. I heard so many "horror" stories about back surgery and I was terrified... Watching my son enduring that much pain at age of 19 was breaking my heart... I couldn't stop crying and praying for the best solution for this condition.

I came across your office and your expertise. We made the first visit and you provided us with faith and most of all convenience... You made the scheduling arrangement so that he had plenty of time to recover before next semester started.

Before and after the surgery.. You assured me of your best ability to help us and you gave me hope and confidence. I couldn't stop thanking you and you simply said "It's my job".

Timmy today is pain-free. He is a senior in college and has a job waiting for him upon graduation.

I am grateful of the quality life that you gave back to my son. I thought of you with gratitude in my heart all the time.

On this Thanksgiving Day.... I am thankful for having to know you and benefiting from your kindness and your work...

Thank you, Dr. Liu....
Happy Thanksgiving!

Respectfully,
Jill Chu

Surgery / Procedure:

To the Entire Staff at Atlantic Spinal Care, Including Dr. Frazier.
To Antonio, Tracey, Rae, Deb, Anne! and anyone I forgot to mention! The Entire Staff!

Even though my surgery started out as one thing and turned into a totally different surgery and equipment was not there when needed, I would not trade or change anything. As soon as I woke up from the surgery, still in the recovery room my pain was going. I mean totally gone! No headache, no neck spasm or shoulder spasm. Dr. Liu and Dr. Frazier are amazing and very blessed in the ability that they have to take away pain and help so many people! I have dealt with my pain for years, and at a point in my life when I did not know where to turn, I was led to them. They are definitely blessed and so am I now that they gave me back my life.

Eternally Grateful,
Robe Koch

Surgery / Procedure: Endoscopic Lumbar Discectomy (05/12/2011)

My overall experience with Dr. Liu, from the initial review of the MRI's, during my attendance at one of his informative Seminars, and a follow-up meeting in his office, was positive and impressive. Furthermore, Dr. Liu, from my initial contact with him, throughout Pre-Op, the Laser Discectomy Surgery, and the Post-Surgery dissertation, displayed a sincere concern for my back condition, and a caring attitude. I felt that I could not be in better hands to rid me of pain. And, I am currently free of most pain. In the final analysis, Dr. Liu gave me his Cell phone number, and two days after surgery, on a Saturday afternoon, after receiving a telephone call from me, called me back, during a break at a Convention meeting that he was attending in Chicago. That spoke "Volumes" to me of Dr. Liu as a Professional, and a concerned human being, I salute him!

Surgery / Procedure: Endoscopic Lumbar Discectomy and Foraminotomy

In keeping with your philosophy of personal attention, I’m attaching a picture of me with my cousin on top of Mt. Huron, a 14,000’ peak in Colorado. Just to let you know what my motivation is to return to life!

I’ve contacted four different facilities around the country that do minimally invasive type of procedures, and Atlantic Spinal Care is #1 for me at this point in my review.

Thank you all so much!
Ann

Gordon

Surgery / Procedure: Endoscopic Foraminotomy

Hello:
My name is Gordon Fraser. I am 78 years old and have been very active my whole life. I had been suffering with spinal stenosis for 6 years. It was semi-debilitating as I could still do many things I wanted to do. The Epidural shots kind of helped. They seem to chase the pain around to other locations.

I took a car ride down to see my son and his family – 9 hours worth of struggle. Upon arrival I was utterly useless. I had to keep looking for someplace to sit down. Any sudden change of position on my part resulted in pain that was increasing in intensity. After the 9 hours return journey, I said to my wife that something had to be done. I could not continue life in this state. As a result I had to suspend my gym membership because every exercise was more painful than the previous one.

This triggered my investigation of minimally invasive doctors. As I had an MRI done per the pain doc, I knew that the stenosis was serious. Even I, with an untrained eye, could see the deformation in my spine.

My investigation took me to two facilities in Florida, two facilities in Dallas, Texas, and another one in the Philadelphia area. The interesting thing about each of these facilities was 1. They each said that they did not take Medicare which I thought to be strange and 2. They said that I was not a good candidate for the procedure after looking at my MRI. Of course this left me with fewer and fewer possibilities. Fortunately, my further research led me to Atlantic Spine Care for which I am now very thankful.

I called the Edison N.J office and a meeting was set up with Dr. Liu in just a few days time. That meeting was very informative and gave me a great feeling that something could be done. As part of the meeting Dr. Liu took my wife and I into another room and showed us the tools that he would be using. Even as interesting as I found it to be, I could not stand to see what he was showing and had to find a chair. I asked Dr. Liu why these other places did not consider me to be a good candidate. His response was they have not been in the business long enough to know how to deal with a spine as messed up as mine was. I also asked about the Medicare issue. He said that Medicare does not pay enough to cover the basic costs let alone make a profit. I set up a date for the procedure to be done while still in the office.

From this point forward THE CALENDAR was the most difficult for me. As Dr. Liu does so many procedures, his calendar is really full and I had to wait 1 month for mine. This hurt as all I could do was sit around, get fat, and watch the calendar. As the time grew near we decided to do a trial run up to the Union N.J. facility as that would be the location for the deed to be done. I recommend that this be standard for everyone contemplating having Dr. Liu work on you.

On the fateful day, we arrived and walked into an office buzzing with people, nurses, doctors, and secretaries. All was very orderly, clean, and efficient. I had to change into a gown and then they sat me down for the blood pressure ect tests. An anesthesiologist came to discuss details with me as did Dr. Liu. They kept me awake during the whole procedure and although I could not see what was going on with my back they kept me informed. While still on the table Dr. liu showed me a small vial. He said this is what he took out of my spine. I said it looks like good fertilizer and he should plant it in his garden. Next I was taken to recovery and was told the nurses are in charge here. I was able to stand up and I decided to see what the effects were. Therefore I went for a walk around the recovery room and next I bent forward to touch my toes – no pain. Next I turned in place to face left then right – no pain. Lastly I balanced on one foot at a time to see how applied additional weight to my spine would feel – no pain. While in the balance mode I wanted to lean forward and make my upper body and led extension parallel to the floor. The nurses would not let me do this. Dr. Liu came in and observed all this. I don’t know what he thought but I know that I felt much better than I had in years.

In a weeks time I had to see Dr. Liu in the Edison office. He wanted to know how I felt ect. And to look at the one stitch hole in my back. He gave me a list of no-no things. The list is too long but he said that the body needs time to recover. In another month I am to go back and hopefully the list will be reduced in size. It is amazing what is considered detrimental to healing. I play bagpipes and was told that I should hold off for a while. This is difficult as my students come and want to hear me play. As I said earlier I had to resign from my gym. Now what I want to know is when is it safe to resume. I was told that walking is OK so I walk 2 miles every day on a treadmill. There are after shocks. Most every day I find something else going on in my body. As an analogy let me say that I liken these feelings to a young boy playing in daddy’s tool box wondering what does this tool do. I think that since the spine no longer is pinching the nerves, these nerves are going out sensing new areas and saying I wonder what this does and so I sense a myriad of feelings that are not usual, not painful, but mildly unsettling because I do not expect them. My solution is to straighten up my spine and I find these feelings go away. In closing let me say thank you Dr. Liu for what you have done for me and hopefully for many others to come. As I said to him in the little Chinese Mandarin that I know “THANK YOU VERY MUCH”
